Family Support
Afterschool and weekend programs are available for children under 21 years of age.
IAHD is committed to providing supports to children and their families, and the Family Support program provides these opportunities. Currently, IAHD operates an after-school program for children attending the Lavelle School for the Blind. This program provides these children with opportunities to make friends, to enjoy socialization and to explore and develop their talents and interests in music and dance. IAHD is proud that many of the children in this program have become accomplished musicians and singers, with opportunities to perform in various venues.
The Sunday Family Support program is open to children with developmental disabilities and their families. This program was designed for several purposes, one of which was to offer working families the opportunity to accomplish shopping and household chores while their children were engaged in meaningful activities. The program was also designed to offer these children opportunities in recreational activities that they might not otherwise be able to experience. The NYC community offers a wide range of activities, and these youngsters have experienced horseback riding, golfing, barbeques, boat rides and baseball games as part of the program. The siblings who attend the program have the opportunity to interact positively with their brother and sisters, and also, to form friendships with other children in the Bronx community who are also growing up with a developmentally challenged sibling.
