Community Participation

From volunteer opportunities to community memberships to neighborhood events, IAHD’s presence within the community is proactive and positive.

Community participation is an important part of all programs that IAHD offers. IAHD practices person centered planning, and individuals who attend our programs and seek community experiences are supported to reach their goals. IAHD believes that individuals can lead more fulfilling lives when they are assisted to interact with people who do not have disabilities, when each day offers them different and interesting experiences and when they find meaning in the activities they join. On a daily basis, individuals who attend the IAHD program are shopping at community stores or retail warehouses, are participating in programs offered by the parks department and community centers, are using memberships at gyms and cultural locations and are participating in a wide range of sports activities and league play.

We subscribe to the belief that individuals can accomplish goals of self-actualization by experiencing the inherent benefits of helping others. People who attend the IAHD program volunteer regularly at the library, laundromat and soup kitchen. The success of our efforts have been repeatedly validated with phone calls from community members thanking us and asking us for our continued assistance. Our attempts to increase social consciousness and positive citizenship have created opportunities for many individuals to express their interests in helping others. IAHD Self-Advocates raised money for Hurricane Katrina relief, conducted voter registration drives and are currently involved in a project to help our country’s veterans.

IAHD is a proud member of all the communities where we are located. From Peekskill to Yonkers to the Bronx and all the neighborhoods in between, individuals supported by IAHD are now seamlessly participating in community life. As a result, IAHD believes that their lives, as well as the lives of the people in the community with whom we are interfacing, are richer and more meaningful.

Social Services

Social Services handles intakes, admissions, entitlements and Medicaid Service Coordination

IAHD recognizes that people might need assistance to negotiate the world of waivers, benefits and entitlements, and our Social Service program is available to help families obtain all the services that they need to support their family member. IAHD has trained Medicaid Service Coordinators who work with individuals to ensure that their needs are met. These Medicaid Service Coordinators help families obtain services, programs, respite, benefits and other needs that the families might have. IAHD’s Social Services Department can help guide people on issues such as guardianship, health care proxies, Medicaid Part D questions and many other issues.

IAHD’s Social Service Department works diligently to help ensure that people with developmental disabilities find the appropriate placement or program. The department works proactively with families and students graduating from school programs who need to learn about the adult service delivery system. IAHD guides these people to help them apply for waiver and to help them find appropriate programs. IAHD’s outreach program works with families, as well as government and other agencies, to help ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities are able to find the services and supports they need.

Adult Day Programs

IAHD provides a variety of different types Day Habilitation Programs and Work Readiness programs that can accommodate the varying abilities and preferences of the adults who are enrolled in our programs.
Find out more.

IAHD offers several options for Day Habilitation programming, but all are designed to accommodate the individual needs and preferences of the people who are enrolled in our program. In fact, person centered planning is so central to our operation that we considered the wants and preferences of our participants in designing the programs and the activities offered to people. Our Day Habilitation programs offer choices of curriculum activities, and centers have been designed to define these choices. Art studios, music centers, computer and communication rooms and fitness centers are amongst some of the activities that are offered. Blended Pre-Vocational Day Habilitation programs offer individuals training in a variety of vocationally oriented tasks. The Day Habilitation without Walls programs allow individuals to fully experience opportunities in the community that reflect their  person centered preferences, while training them to meet their valued outcomes and help them move closer towards self-actualization. The “Without Walls” concept puts learning in the natural environments of all the rich resources the NYC environment has to offer.
IAHD also offers a “Work Readiness” program which provides opportunities for people to work in supervised settings and to earn a small stipend. Our own buildings, as well as other community locations, provide opportunities for individuals to learn cleaning and  maintenance skills, photocopying, kitchen assistance and other valued work skills.

Vibrant Self-Advocacy programs have formed in all of our day program centers. These Self-Advocates have formed a basketball team and play competitively. They volunteer in area hospitals, participate in leadership conferences and are constantly seeking new opportunities for themselves and the people whom they represent.

Clinical services, including speech, nutritional, psychological, medical and nursing oversight, are available in all of our day programs.

Mission

IAHD exists to provide services to individuals with development disabilities. The agency is committed to providing opportunities for self-actualization and growth regardless of the extent of the disability.

Our mission is to provide creative and responsive programs and services for the purpose of promoting optimal function and slowing regression. We are fully committed to ensuring that the individuals we support have opportunities to experience inclusion and integration in the community in which they live, learn and work. We are also fully committed to providing supports to individuals and families to help them achieve a quality of life in a preferred environment that reflects their choices and preferences and their rights to self-determination.

The core value of our mission and the work that we do is that all life is sacred and that every human being has the potential for growth. We believe that each person, regardless of level of ability or disability, is entitled to the same dignity, respect and opportunities as other members of society. It is with this spirit that we continue to advocate for people in need of our services and special care.

History

The Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics, Inc (IAHD) was founded in 1957 to provide a range of services for mentally retarded, brain-injured and emotionally disturbed infants, children, youth and adults. At its inception, parents and volunteers were trained in the practical application of psychodynamic, socio-dynamic, activity-dynamic arts and sciences so they could learn to serve these exceptional people in our programs and in their homes.

Swimming

IAHD has pride in its long history of collaboration with energetic parents who continue to make important contributions to the success of the agency. Today, IAHD serves over 750 persons with developmental disabilities and their families. We are committed to serving people from birth throughout their entire life span.

Family Support

IAHD is committed to providing supports to children and their families, and the Family Support program provides these opportunities. Currently, IAHD operates an after-school program for children attending the Lavelle School for the Blind. This program provides these children with opportunities to make friends, to enjoy socialization and to explore and develop their talents and interests in music and dance. IAHD is proud that many of the children in this program have become accomplished musicians and singers, with opportunities to perform in various venues.

The Sunday Family Support program is open to children with developmental disabilities and their families. This program was designed for several purposes, one of which was to offer working families the opportunity to accomplish shopping and household chores while their children were engaged in meaningful activities. The program was also designed to offer these children opportunities in recreational activities that they might not otherwise be able to experience. The NYC community offers a wide range of activities, and these youngsters have experienced horseback riding, golfing, barbeques, boat rides and baseball games as part of the program. The siblings who attend the program have the opportunity to interact positively with their brother and sisters, and also, to form friendships with other children in the Bronx community who are also growing up with a developmentally challenged sibling.

Our clinical service department which includes registered nurses, licensed speech pathologists, nutritionists and psychologists provide oversight and recommendations to ensure that each individual’s needs are met. IAHD operates houses for children and adults and is committed to providing homes for people even as they age and their needs change.

Education Programs and Services

We provide instructional and therapeutic programs for children with learning, language, motor, communication and behavioral challenges. Available to all children who qualify from birth to 21 years of age.

IAHD’s Early Intervention Services are available for children from birth to three years of age. IAHD provides service coordination, evaluations, special instruction in a center-based facility, family training, speech and language, physical and occupational therapy. If you have concerns about your child’s development, you should call 311 and ask for “Early Intervention” assistance. If your child qualifies for services and is authorized to receive these services by the Bronx Early Intervention Program, they will be provided at no cost to you. The IAHD—St. Mary’s Early Intervention Program is funded and regulated by the NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene  and the NYS Dept. of Health.

The Preschool Program is available to children between the ages of 3 and 5. Children receive evaluations to determine their eligibility for this program, and if they qualify, they can attend IAHD’s center based preschool program at no charge. Various therapies can be provided at the center. Depending on the need of the child and the recommendation of the district’s Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) team, the child can attend the program to receive instruction on meeting individually prescribed objectives.

The Universal Pre-Kindergarten program is an education program for four-year-olds.  IAHD offers a government sponsored UPK program for two and a half hours daily during the school calendar year. Educational activities that prepare children for school are offered during this time. Children do not need to have a language/learning disability to attend this program, which is considered to be a readiness program for kindergarten.

IAHD’s School Age program has been designed for children whose special needs make it  too difficult for this group of children to attend more traditional programs. A small teacher/student ratio and assistance in areas of living skills, as well as specialized teaching and training, make this a valuable program for students between the ages of 5 and 21.
